    Fatal George Street Fire
    May 25, 1966

THREE PERISH IN CITY FIRE
After saving her 2 year old son, a mother perished when she went back into the building to save her two sons from a fire at 347 George Street. Her husband was out of town on business.

Firefighters were called to the house shortly after midnight. It was estimated that some 12 people had turned in alarms. A neighbour said that flames were shooting from the sides on the second story before firemen arrived.

Firefighter Karl Jones (pictured at top left) went in with his airpack on and came out moments later with the mother, who was on the stairs. A second fireman, Vince Porter (pictured at top right) also went in and found the two boys, ages 6 and 9 and brought them out.

A crowd estimated at 500 people gathered during the fire

FF Porter went on to become a captain, but was killed in the line of duty in 1974.
